HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION
For people:
The fumes from the burning of MMAN may contain nitrogen oxides and can irritate
the respiratory system and in serious cases, bronchitis, emphysema and bronchopneumonia.
MMAN is a marine pollutant.
- INHALATIONS:
Remove affected victim from the area to fresh air. Seek medical help. - EYE CONTACT:
Wash with abundant water for at least fifteen minutes. Seek medical help - SKIN CONTACT:
No risk Wash with neutral soap and water. - INGESTION:
Provoke vomiting if the victim is conscious. Seek medical help.
For fires involving the product, use the applicable fire extinguisher. Water spray is also
acceptable.
- Non-Fire Response:
Keep sparks, flames, and other sources of ignition away. Keep spilled material wet. Wet
spilled material before picking it up. Do not attempt to sweep up dry material. (@ AAR,
2003) - Protective Clothing:
Avoid breathing dusts, and fumes from burning material. Wear appropriate chemical
protective gloves and goggles. Do not handle broken packages unless wearing appropriate
personal protective equipment. Wash away any material, which may have contacted the
body with copious amounts of water or soap and water. Wear positive pressure selfcontacted breathing apparatus when fighting fires involving this material. (@AAR, 2003) - First Aid:
Call emergency medical care. Use first aid treatment according to the nature of the injury.(@AAR, 2003)
Small spills may be washed away onto soil or grass with copious of water. Do not wash any
spillages into rivers, storm water systems or sewerage systems. Major spillages should be
contained as well as possible and absorbed into dry sand and collected and bagged. This
contaminated sand must be decontaminated by burning
- Handling
MMAN is handled as on oxidizing liquid.
Smoking and naked lights should not be permitted near the product
Storage areas should be equipped with running water. - STORAGE
MMAN must be stored in a cool, ventilated area, preferably away from direct sunlight.
Only store with materials of the same compatibility group
Do not store the MMAN with flammable products
Avoid smoking or fire in storage areas.
Personal Protection:
- Eyes: Use safety goggles/shields to avoid getting into eyes
- Hands: Use PVC or PVA gloves
- General: Normal working clothes, preferably cotton.
Do not dispose of in the regular sewerage system.
Respect local regulations.
The product is harmful to aquatic life.
Preferably, by dilution with copious amounts of water. (For small amounts only.) Destruction
by open fire on thin burning bed, avoiding contamination of the land Risk of explosion during
burning if the fire is contained.
The nitrates contained in its composition can cause irritation and eventually, skin allergies.
Contact may cause irritation to skin, eyes, and mucous membranes, may be toxic by ingestion.
EPA has not published toxicity information or toxicity values (e.g., RfD) for MMAN. MMAN are
not considered carcinogens by EPA. Chronic studies of the toxicological effects of MMA were
not found in the current literature. Evidence from occupational studies has shown no longlasting health effects when workers were exposed to MMAN via inhalation and dermal
contact (ACGIH, 1988).
